K-dramas have been known to many but understood by few. Considering its growing popularity, you’ve surely seen at least one person acquainted with you that has seen or sees a K-drama. And if you’re curious as to what it comprises, let’s get ready to venture into a whole new cosmos of varied shimmering genres.
WHAT IS A K-DRAMA AND WHAT DOES IT OFFER?
A K-drama is short for Korean drama which is a set of episodes that follow a designated story line. These dramas submit a variety of genres which range from a thrilling chronicle of a misconducted protagonist to a calming tale of a budding romance. Fair warning, they can be pretty addictive as have been experienced by many watchers. But what makes them so compelling in the first place?
Attractive casting : As the canon of an entertainment industry that follows, a drama with an eye-catching bunch of actors promotes itself fairly well. Same is in the case of K-dramas. A tall and handsome man and a lady with exquisite looks as protagonists is sure to entice numerous audiences.
Emotional connection : Every person craves to get his/her emotion understood. K-drama producers seem to catch and replicate the exact emotions a person can be feeling in a situation. K-dramas capture portray an array of emotions that makes one feel perceived.
Wholesome : K-dramas don’t necessarily put out much explicit content when it comes to skin-ships. Almost all scenes are family friendly making it age appropriate for a larger audience.
The Romance Essence : Almost every K-drama has a romantic inclination. Even the most fast-paced charade will have a touch of romantic bits here and there.
Varied Genres : As mentioned before, K-dramas offer a palette of different categories to choose from. Suspense, thrillers, haunting, romance, tragedies, action and much more. Even if you don’t particularly like romance, K-dramas would still have something for you to offer.
A new cultural experience : This is the most exciting part of it all. You get to explore a whole new culture, a brand new language to add to your vocabulary list. Being able to understand, speak and read a foreign language is honestly a thrill on its own.
STIGMA REGARDING K-DRAMAS:
K-dramas have been around for a fair amount of time but very little has been known about this industry to the world. Of course, the curious minds have already explored their way to these sparklers, whereas others have unfortunately fallen prey to involuntary xenophobic and racist mentalities thrusted into their minds by the surrounding society.
“Why do you watch it when you can’t even understand what they’re saying? They sound so weird. Don’t you feel uncomfortable listening to it?”
Folks, its an entirely different language. For sure it will sound weird at first because you’re not used to it. Try to ignore it, focus on the story line and it will get manageable over the time. And after you’ve passed that phase, you’ll actually find the language very endearing. Some words for a certain emotion doesn’t even have a perfect English translation but you’ll be able to understand that very feeling purely because of its portrayal. Intriguing, isn’t it?
“Why do the guys have no facial hair? Why is the girl so skinny? Don’t they all look the same?”
People need to understand that beauty standards are divergent for every country, every community. Korea, in this case, prefers clean-shaved, clear skinned male appearance for it represents class. For ladies, a doll-like appearance is admired. Now, when it comes to them looking alike, can you really differentiate a person from any other worldly community in just one glance? Take a good look and you’ll notice the obvious difference.
“UGH, I DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO READ ALL THESE SUBTITLES.”
“Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” said Bong Joon Ho, the director of the famous movie ‘Parasite’ in his recent Golden Globes speech. Listen to me guys, its never too strenuous to read one or two lines at a time. Moreover, its an excellent concentration exercise for your brain.
If you’re able to overcome all these ‘obstacles’, give these winsome creations a chance and I am sure you’ll find the likable. If you had any reservations regarding K-dramas, I hope they’re cleared after reading this blog.
